The Ignace area is a photographer's paradise. The tourists are
supplied with an overwhelming amount of natural beauty and
exhilarating sights. The rugged landscape along with the
magnificent cliffs, breathtaking waterfalls, and crystal clear
rivers and lakes has made the area famous for its pictoral
splendor.
White Otter Castle was hand built in 1903 by Jimmy
McOuat, a lonely prospector who had
lost all his fortunes in the gold rush and gambling. Ever since,
thousands of visitors have
marveled at the enormity of the feat of one man, alone, hoisting
three tonne logs of green timber
four stories in the air to erect such a building. A 1.1 million
dollar conservation project was
completed just recently to ensure that the castle remains for
future generations to visit.
Raleigh Falls, located only 10 minutes from Ignace,
offers a breathtaking view of the
falls and picnic area and demonstrates the inherent beauty found
in this rugged landscape.
Puzzling Pictographs or Indian paintings can be found
throughout the Ignace area which can be dated back to
prehistoric times.
Trails, trails and more trails can be found in the Ignace
area. The 16,000 km Trans
Canada Trail which spans from east coast of Canada to
the west coast and north to Nunavet,
passes directly through Ignace. The Turtle River Park
provides over 150 km's of back
country canoeing destinations. The locally operated IWOC
Trails provides walking trails
right in the heart of Ignace, which in the wintertime is used as
a cross-country ski trail. A network
of highly groomed snowmobile trails pass through
Ignace interconnecting many destinations
in Northwestern Ontario and the United States.
Wall Murals painted by area artists are found along the
main corridor, providing a sense of
local history and heritage.
